Introduction
Who are the best book editors in India?
There is no single “best” editor – the right one depends on your genre, your budget and the kind of edit your manuscript needs. This guide lists 64 book editors and editorial firms working with Indian authors: what each of them edits, where they are based and how to reach them.
TL;DR
- 64 editors and firms, split into editorial companies and freelance editors, with emails and websites for each.
- Most editors here work on both fiction and non-fiction; a few are academic-only. Each entry says so.
- Editing is usually charged per word, and the rate depends on the type of editing and the editor’s experience. For current rates, see our detailed guide to book editing charges in India.
- Always ask for a sample edit and a written quote before you commit, and check references.
Who this guide is for: writers who have finished a manuscript (or are close) and want a professional edit before they self-publish, or before they pitch to publishers and agents.
How the guide is organised: We have listed editorial firms and companies first, then individual freelance editors. Each entry lists the editor’s location, contact details, services and genres in the editor’s own words.
How current is this? Websites and links were re-checked in October 2026.
Once your manuscript is edited and ready, here is our master list of book publishing companies in India and the top literary agents in India. Planning to self-publish instead? See self-publishing companies in India and our breakdown of Amazon KDP vs self-publishing in India.

Who is a book editor?
Book editors work on your manuscript across different aspects – storyline, plot, characters, narrative, dialogue, language and grammar. They polish your manuscript to make it publishing-ready.
Why should you work with an editor?
The value of a good editor for your book cannot be overstated. An editor doesn’t just provide constructive feedback at the language level – a good editor can transform a book, shape it into its best self. One excellent example is Tay Hohoff, who worked closely with Harper Lee for over three years. The outcome was “To Kill a Mockingbird” as we know it.
With the availability of online apps and sites like Grammarly, one might argue against the need to hire an editor. But any app or site comes with its own limitations around language, local words and names, and grammar. For example, while “colour” is right in American English, it is incorrect in British English. An app might not catch localised words for food, dressing habits, traditions and culture, which matter when you are writing a story set in India. Most importantly, apps cannot look at structure and flow – they only give feedback at the language and grammar level. For structure and flow, you need an editor competent enough to do structural editing.
Moreover, writing can be lonely. Having an editor with you also means having a person by your side – a sounding board, agony aunt, friend, confidante and your 3 am go-to person for anything and everything that is writerly. Of course, that is what friends and family are for, but professionals are professionals. The value and expertise they bring cannot be quantified in words.
What are the different types of editing?
Usually, book editors in India provide the following editing services:
Structural editing / developmental editing. The editor analyses the manuscript on the various aspects of novel writing – theme, characters, genre and sub-genre for fiction, and clarity and consistency for non-fiction. The core focus here is the plot and the narrative. Recommended for authors looking for detailed feedback on their writing, including plot, characters and flow.
Line editing. Correcting and improving consistency, tone and style. The editor works on the grammar of the manuscript along with spelling and punctuation. The focus here is the language. Recommended for authors whose manuscript is already structurally strong and who are looking only for language correction.
Proofreading. The final step: a thorough check for inconsistencies, spacing issues, spelling mistakes, typos and grammatical errors that may have been missed, so the manuscript is error-free and ready for publishing. Recommended for authors who have already self-edited to a large extent and need one more pair of eyes.
Please note: We have collected and collated this information from various sources, including direct submissions. We are not directly or indirectly involved with any of the editors or firms listed here, and inclusion is not an endorsement. Please do your own due diligence before hiring anyone from this list.

Points to consider while hiring the editing services of a manuscript editor
- Editing is usually charged on a per-word basis, and the charge varies from editor to editor. It depends on factors ranging from the type of editing required to the experience of the editor. For the rates currently charged by leading editors, see our detailed post on book editing charges in India. Charges also vary with the volume and nature of work involved.
- You can avail all of the above editing services or any one of them depending on your requirements. The cost will vary accordingly.
- Any manuscript can require more than one round of editing to make it error-free.
- If required, you can always request references. Most editors are willing to share references of clients and books they have worked on, or testimonials of their work, unless a confidentiality clause does not allow them to. Some have mentioned these on their sites for easy access.
Other services for writers
Apart from editing, some of these editors also offer services like ghostwriting, beta reading, manuscript review and research. A brief idea of what these mean:
Ghostwriting. Like hiring someone else to write your book. When the book gets published, it is still in your name and the writer (the ghost, in this case) walks away with the payment you have made towards writing the book. Charges are usually based on the nature of the project, research required, word count and delivery deadlines.
Beta reading / manuscript review / manuscript appraisal / manuscript assessment. Simply put, a review of your book before it is published. Beta readers are usually experts in specific genres, and their feedback covers various elements of book writing along with the salability of the book. Unlike editing, these reports are charged on the total word count of the manuscript and have a slab rate instead of a per-word charge.
Research. When a book is backed by immense research, the research can take up much of your writing time. You can decrease some of that workload by allocating the research work to someone else while you focus solely on writing. The cost depends on the number of hours allocated.
If you are just starting out with an idea, you might want to read our beginner’s guide to writing a novel. And once your book is edited, you will need a cover – here is our list of book cover designers in India.
In conclusion
Editing is an imperative phase of any writer’s journey to getting published. History has witnessed many successful writer-editor teams who have gone on to deliver bestseller after bestseller. What makes a strong writer-editor team is the ability to understand each other’s needs and execute them perfectly – and that happens only over time, with patience and effort from both ends.
As Tim Foote says, “Everyone needs an editor!” – and with this list, we believe it is just a matter of time before you find the perfect editor for your manuscript.
Note: If you are an editor, or know someone who is, and would like to be added to this list, do fill up this form.

An excellent article to help new authors with their work. Just one shortcoming, it seems your article includes editors in the English language only. Could you include a few Hindi and other Indian language editors as well?
Great suggestions. we might come up with a separate list in the future. Thank you.
Thanks for the help.
Very educative article for the writers to continue with their journey.
This could have been a great article but it is not because the blog has not been edited for whatever reasons. Also, proof-reading has been listed as a type of editing, which is wrong. Proof-reading is a process that takes place after the manuscript has been typeset. The title says, “30 Manuscript Editors …,” but the list has 31 names.
We intended to highlight it as one of the many services (Typesetting) taking into consideration authors who would like to opt for Amazon KDP route for publishing and hence, would skip the typesetting but need this service.
Also, the list is dynamic as we are still adding more people to the list. Our aim to build a database of editors in India. As we keep adding people, we will keep changing the number to match it as well.
Thanks for the clarification on proofreading. If the list is dynamic, the title of the blog should be changed. The aim is noble, but there should also be a screening process. My question about the blog not being edited still remains unanswered,
This is great information. I remember being informed about this during the retreat and thought this was great information. Thank you.
Thanks Shubhra, so glad to know you found it of value!
Thank you for including me, Chetan and team. You’re doing a great job.
Thanks Chetan for a very informative piece. Is the price which you have mentioned standard across India or is it different based on the region or the language. Would really appreciate if you had some suggestions or information on editors from Kerala.
Hi Ronia,
The price mentioned by us was more of a range we observed when we wrote that article. The cost usually depends on various factors like the type of editing involved, number of words and also the experience of the editors.
As of now, we do not have any specific information or suggestions on editors from Kerala as per the data collated from our form.
Hi Chetan! Detailed, useful post. :)
I am amazed at and grateful for the work you are doing! Thanks!
I am looking for substantial language editing service for my manuscript (English, Fiction, 45600+ words).
Hi Chaitanya,
You can directly contact any of these editors listed above who match your requirement through the details shared along with their profile.
Hi Chetan,
Thanks for including me in the list of editors for fiction. Appreciate the good work.
I have had quite a few authors approaching me to edit their manuscripts through your website. Many of them, have resulted in successful projects.
Unfortunately, many authors scout around writing to as many of the editors listed on your website.
But I guess that’s what the competitive world is all about.
Its a wonderful list, really helpful for fresh authors like me. I am finding an editor in India to edit my novel. Thanks a lot for giving this list.
Really helpful! Can you also write an article on the best marketing services for books in India.
Hi!
Thank you, we are already working on it. Expect to release it on the blog soon. Do stay tuned.
I am looking for my book editing related to social work
Hi Rashmi,
You can consider approaching any of the editors from the list above directly with your query.
Dear Chetan please share some experience or knowledge about EDIOAK.
Hi. We have no personal experience with any of these editors. If you would like us to include EDIOAK to this list, please fill out the form at https://forms.gle/AFEUQMVgrZGnwvBW8 .
Hi Rashmi,
I have a degree in social psychology from the UK. I can go through your social work related book in exchange to my 250-page text. That means I have a nonfiction 300 page text that needs another pair of eyes to read, because I might miss some words or made minor mistake. My text is simple and nonfiction, written for general public.
Drop me a few lines if you still have your text.
Regards,
Alexander

Please give some reviews about Edioak.
Hi
Based on your experiences, kindly suggest and collabrative editiodr for developmental / structural edit.
My novel is in the crime and thriller category and already completed however it still needs work for which I need guidance. I want to get a development / structural editor who likes to work on crime and thrillers.
Hi Abhishek,
You can connect with any of the editors mentioned in the list directly. To understand their services better you can analyse their offerings and experience vis-a-vis your expectations.
After going through the various comments, I thought of asking for any of your suggestions for me. I self-published (kdp Amazon)) fiction on August 18 (this month)and till today no book is sold. I am thoroughly confused. This is my first book. Due to financial difficulty, I did not get any editor for it but used the Grammarly premium and towards the end of the book ProWritingAid Premium for editing. The name of the book is “The Fire within: waxing out…living for others” by Tom Kottackal. Now, it is on amazon kindle. Any precious and effective suggestions on what to do now, please? (e-mail ID: tksj20@gmail.com).
Thank you friends
Tom
I have printed typed script ready. Now, I need two different persons:

I have a question. May not totally about or arising out of this article. But still…
How does one approach to publish one’s article in electronic or print media? I attempt to write short articles of information and opinion pieces as well. Where does one tries to publish and find readers?
Hi Sujit,
Most media have submission guidelines on their websites – for both online and print. You can take a look at our blog post about Lit magazines in India that accept fiction. non-fiction and poetry submissions:
