In this masterclass, award-winning author Kiran Manral simplifies the whole process of writing thrillers.

The masterclass opens with understanding what a thriller is. Next, Kiran Manral breaks down the elements of a good thriller. She explains the structure, and walks you through the process of writing one. The Masterclass covers:

  • Plot /Sub-plot structures ideal for thrillers
  • Characters - mapping them and making them compelling
  • Dialogues to keep the suspense high

About Kiran Manral

Kiran Manral is an award-winning and bestselling author, TEDx speaker, columnist and mentor. She worked as a journalist with before she quit fulltime work to be a fulltime mommy.

Based in Mumbai, she published her first novel The Reluctant Detective in 2011.

Since then, she has written books across genres in both fiction and non-fiction. She was among the top bloggers in India, before she moved on to writing fiction.

Her books include 'The Reluctant Detective', 'Once Upon A Crush', 'All Aboard', 'Karmic Kids-The Story of Parenting Nobody Told You', 'A Boy’s Guide to Growing Up', 'True Love Stories', 'Saving Maya' ’13 Steps to Bloody Good Parenting', 'Raising Kids with Hope and Wonder in Times of a Pandemic and Climate Change', 'The Kitty Party Murder' and 'More Things in Heaven and Earth'.

Her novella, Saving Maya, was long listed for the Saboteur Awards UK, supported by the Arts Council England. She was shortlisted for the Femina Women Awards for Literary Contribution in 2017. The Indian Council of UN Relations (ICUNR) with the Ministry of Women and Children, Govt of India, awarded her the International Women’s Day Award 2018 for excellence in the field of writing. Her book, The Kitty Party Murder, was longlisted for Popular Choice award at the TOI JK Papers AutHER Awards 2021.

Her novels 'The Face At the Window’ and ‘Missing, Presumed Dead' were both long-listed for Jio MAMI Word to Screen, and ‘The Face at the Window’ was also shortlisted for the South Asian Film Festival 2019 .

She also has published short stories in various magazines, as well as in acclaimed anthologies like Have A Safe Journey, Boo, Magical Women, The Best Asian Speculative Fiction 2018 City of Screams and the forthcoming Third Eye.

Manral is also the founder of India Helps, a network of volunteers who worked with 26/11 victims.

Her latest book is a literary thriller cum horror called More things in Heaven and Earth which has been recently released by Amaryllis.

2. Is this a substitute for the Creative Writing Course? Or is this a level above?

The Creative Writing Course led by Chetan Mahajan is for beginners. We recommend that workshop for anyone and everyone who wants to write and has a keen interest in exploring the art of creative writing . 

 While, this is a masterclass led by award-winning author Kiran Manral. It is specifically for thriller writers and would be ideal for writers whose writing is of intermediate or higher level.

3. I write in my mother tongue which is not English. Can I attend this workshop?

Yes, you can.

You can write in any language but feedback will be given only on works that are in English. Moreover, the sessions and the class readings will also be largely in English. So some proficiency in English is essential. 

One can always apply the learnings from the workshop in any language they write in.

4. Is a writing sample mandatory for acceptance in the workshop?

Yes

5. Is there any minimum age criteria for participants?

No

6. Is an outline mandatory? I always wanted to write thrillers and  want to join this workshop just to get an idea about how to start formulating on one?

An outline is mandatory, or at the very least, a clear idea about the premise and the category of thriller you wish to write. 

7. Is thriller writing that much different & specialized that it needs a separate masterclass?

Absolutely, the demands of a thriller are completely different from the demands of, say, a romantic novel or a historical and therefore it does need a different approach from what one must take while writing other genres. 

8. Will this workshop also include learning how to write financial thrillers, political thrillers, fantasy thrillers, etc. also?

Yes

9. Will feedback be provided on the writing submissions by both Kiran Manral and other participants?

Yes

10. What if I miss out on any of the sessions for personal reasons?

Our sessions are live and not recorded. Hence, in case you miss out on any of the sessions, there is no way you can attend it again except perhaps ask any of the other participants to brief you on those topics.

11. What is the pre-work?

Pre-work is a reading material or writing assignment given by Kiran Manral to all the participants before the workshop. It can be an article, a short story, or an essay which will further be discussed and analyzed in the workshop. The pre-work is shared a few days before the workshop to give you ample time to go through it.

12. Is the pre-work mandatory?

Yes, it is mandatory.

13. Will the Masterclass help with publishing the book / finding a literary agent?

No, the Masterclass will help you understand how to write great thrillers. You will also learn how to pitch your book and design a marketing plan. 

14. Will this course happen in the Himalayas in the future? 

As of now, nothing is planned. 

15. What’s in store after the workshop is over? 

We believe in creating a community for writers.  After attending one of our courses, the participants stay connected and work as a writing group. The close bond formed from the shared experience means you share, get feedback, become beta readers, critique works, and much more. We also host free events like the Himalayan First Draft Club and the Himalayan Book Club.
