So, when my book was released, my readers had come to know two things: Anangsha writes about women’s issues, and Anangsha writes about the need to control what kind of information we share online. Because they knew what to expect from my tone of writing, several readers purchased my book on the release day.
Pick two platforms
While having an online presence is awesome, it’s not possible to be active on all the platforms. To build your online community, pick two platforms that work best for you. You can choose any platform, but here are a few pointers to keep in mind:
- It should have a decent number of users who actively engage with posts. A quick Google search will let you know the composition of users for any platform and how likely they are to buy the products they see.
- You should be familiar with the platform and have a basic understanding of its algorithm. Don’t worry if you think you’re not too tech-savvy. Spending a few weeks actively going through popular posts on any platform will give you a clear idea about what kind of posts work there.
Quora has 300 million monthly active users, most of whom are highly-educated adults (65% users have a college degree). The best part of using Quora is that the most popular answers are in the form of stories. Aside from that, you have the freedom to turn any question around to format your answer and suit your needs. The most popular questions like “What is the happiest moment of your life?” and “What’s something that made you smile recently?” have upwards of 30 million views.
To promote your book on social media, you can fit just about anything as your answer to this and add a link where readers can buy your book. Your marketing doesn’t even have to be too in-your-face. If the readers appreciate your writing, they are naturally going to want to read more. There’s also an option to run paid promotions on Quora. According to a recent announcement, the people using Quora Ads see up to 4x more conversions than on other platforms.
Instagram, on the other hand, is like the dream destination of every new writer. As of July 2020, there are one billion active users on Instagram with 500 million of them turning up daily. Over 130 million users engage with shopping posts on a monthly basis. The brand engagement rates on Instagram are 10x higher than Facebook. One-third of all Instagram users have purchased at least once through the mobile app.
You can create engaging pictures using free tools like Canva and add a “Shop” link where users will be directed to Amazon or your website. This helps in creating eye-catching visuals to promote your book on social media. Instagram also has other ways to engage readers like telling a story through a carousel post or taking polls and Q&A sessions with your readers via your stories.
The most important rule about marketing is to never let the reader feel incomplete without your book. They shouldn’t read your post and feel cheated. You should deliver enough value in your post so that the ones who don’t click on your link are satisfied as well.
For example, sharing quotes or behind-the-scenes snippets from your book is perfectly fine. However, sharing a part of the story to arouse the reader’s interest, and then leaving them craving for more information is not. Your readers invest time in going through your post.
Respect that time by delivering value. Don’t make them feel as if they are losing out by not buying your book, as such aggressive marketing often might have a negative impact on the buyer’s mindset.
In an ideal world, you should post daily. But if your other commitments keep you busy, design a fixed schedule of posting and stick to it. - Instagram is a great place for sharing all the book reviews you received as this will generate a lot of interest among your prospective buyers.
- You can also reach out to book reviewers on Instagram by clicking on the #Bookstagram hashtag and messaging the popular readers if they would like to review your book.
- You can look up the hashtag #IndieAuthors and find fellow writers with whom you can exchange reviews.

Giveaways are a fun way to make readers genuinely curious about your book. It is a tried and tested way to promote your book on social media. You can announce a book giveaway on your social media profiles and pick a few lucky winners to send copies of your books to. The winners can be picked on the basis of:
- Whether or not they have “liked” your post
- How many times they have shared your content and spread the word about the ongoing contest
- Are they following you, etc.
You can also choose to make your book available for free on Amazon and then spread the word using social media. Selling free books attracts a lot of potential readers, and you can end up with an impressive number of reviews from people who might not have otherwise read your book.
Promoting your book on social media might seem difficult to start with, but it isn’t. However, it’s not always easy to sell 10,000+ copies of your book. You have to step out of your comfort zone and try a lot of new avenues.
