Editing & Research for writers

Edit your Writing.

“Shitty First Drafts” – the words are crass and beautiful at the same time. Crass for obvious reasons. Beautiful because Anne Lamott goes on to write “...all good writers write them. That is how they land up with good second drafts and terrific third drafts.” (Chapter 3, “Bird by Bird”, Anne Lamott). Shitty first drafts are beautiful. Every writer is thrilled she's not the sole creator of one. And relieved there is hope.

Having finished our first drafts, we now must edit, clean up and finalize our stories. Make them their best selves. We now must turn our first daft (no, that is not a typo) into a good second draft, a better third draft and so on. That means two things: first, we research and replace all the “TBR” (To Be Researched) entries with real information. Second, we edit our manuscript for flow, structure and clarity. That is where this workshop on editing and research helps.

Editing and research differ from writing. Writing is creative, right brain stuff where you want your brain to wander and take trips - sometimes induced. Editing and research are grounded, rational and logical - the opposite of trippy.

This one-day workshop will help with these skills. We host the “Editing and Research for Writers” workshop on Sunday the 10th of January, 2021.  The zoom workshop will be 10 A.M. - 5 P.M. with a one-hour break for lunch. The price is INR 2900 (including 18% GST). To sign up , click this button.

In this workshop, we’ll understand the process behind good research. How to think about it, learn it and do it. It is hard to convince others of realities which don't live inside us. To convince another of a reality, we must let it inhabit us. Immerse ourselves in it.

While research makes our writing authentic, editing makes it efficient. Punchy. Clear. In the editing module, we'll learn how to wield a machete methodically and brutally to make our writing its best. Machete’s invariably hurt, and the editing bit is going to hurt at least some of us. “Kill your darlings” exhorts Stephen King. We’ll learn how.
